FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY,FROM FIELD TO FASHION

This first phase begins in the field where the plant is grown and the fiber is picked by hand or machine. It is critical that throughout this process we remain respectful of the conditions that allow these plants to prosper, taking into consideration use of pesticides or amount of water. It is also essential to properly manage the cultivation of these plant fibers as we don’t want to disrupt the ecosystem or affect the local society that may depend on these plants for their day to day living.

GROWING

This first phase begins in the field where the plant is grown and the fiber is picked by hand or machine. It is critical that throughout this process we remain respectful of the conditions that allow these plants to prosper, taking into consideration use of pesticides or amount of water. It is also essential to properly manage the cultivation of these plant fibers as we don’t want to disrupt the ecosystem or affect the local society that may depend on these plants for their day to day living.

ORIGINS COLLECTION

We use 100% organic cotton that is hand picked in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Organic cotton is a fibre of vegetable origin that can be transformed without chemical treat- ments such as fertilizers. By mixing the cotton through dierent soils, the nutrients are pre- served and allow for the fiber to grow stronger and longer over time, leading to an added softness that you can ́t deny. It is breathable meaning it keeps you feeling fresh.

Our organic cotton is GOTS certified, one of the leading standard setting certificates that guarantees an organic production process free of harmful chemicals, fair and respectful working conditions for those within the factory.

PONCHO COLLECTION

We use conventional cotton that is grown and machine-picked in Pakistan. We are aware that conventional cotton cultivation involves a large consumption of water and the use of pesticides, herbicides and other chemical products with negative consequences for the environment. Even so, these natural fibers are biodegradable over time; reducing the impact that natural fibers have on the environment compared to synthetic fibers that break down much more slowly.

GINNING

From the field, the cotton is moved to nearby gins to be cleaned. The cotton first goes through dryers which reduce the moisture. Using premium machines called strippers, the seeds, lint, and any other foreign material are removed. The cotton is then compounded together into large blocks weighing approximately 500 pounds, and stored before being sent to the textile mill.

ORIGINS COLLECTION

In this collection, the ginning process takes place in Guyarat, India.

UPCYCLING

Upcycling is the process of breaking down, transforming, and giving a second life to a material and avoiding the over usage of natural resources. Plastics have a grave impact on marine life and ecosystems, therefore, upcycling is a great way to take something that does such damage to our ocean and give it a fuctional use.

ORIGINS COLLECTION

In our ORIGINS collection, our Fuvamulah Towels are made of SEAQUAL® and recyled cotton. SEAQUAL® is a durable fiber made of 100% recycled materials, 10% is upcycled marine plastic and the remaining 90% is from post-consumer PET. The plastic collected is cleaned, turned into granules, then fiber, and then to a high-quality fabric.

SPINNING

We’re making our way to the mill where in a process called spinning, the large compounds of cotton are made into textile fibers and strands and then yarns.

ORIGINS COLLECTION

For our ORIGINS collection, our organic cotton is spun in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

WEAVING

Weaving is the process of taking the newly made threads to make a complete piece of fabric. The yarn is woven at right angles to each other, finding the perfect and snug fit to create one complete piece of cloth. All of our products are knitted fabrics. The stitches can be extended or widened to achieve elasticity, allowing you to move freely within your clothing.

PONCHO COLLECTION

For our PONCHO collection, we make our way to Barcelona, Spain, where our partner, Gonclovil, knits using a flat weaving technique, which is the locking in of warp and weft threads. Warped threads are made of coarser fibers and layed vertically. Weft threads lye horizontally and are looped throughought the warp threads.

DYEING

Dyeing is the part of our journey where we give our products some life to them with color.

We know that this is one of the riskiest phases of production as it tends to include lots of harmful chemicals. As there is currently no method to filter the water used, liters of contaminated water go into the ocean. For that reason, with every collection, we make sure to improve our dyeing techniques by using dyes with low impact, from natural pigments, or not using dyes at all.

PONCHO COLLECTION

For this collection, we use reactive dyes, which are non-toxic. The entire process results in 90% less chemicals and less water used than traditional dyeing techniques and the water can be recycled and reused. Most of the dye is absorbed into the fabric, so there are far fewer residual substances than when using traditional dyes. The best part is that the water used can also be recycled through filtration processes and reused in future batches.

Our reactive dyes are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning that they have been tested for more than 300 harmful substances and assures that no harmful chemicals are included.

FINISHING

WHERE and WITH WHO you make your clothing is one of the most important aspects of ensuring an ethical production.

We work with trusted partners based locally in Europe to reduce our carbon footprint in regards to transportation and as well with workshops that have a social impact. They all hold certificates that show their commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.

First step within the finishing stage is the checking of fabric for faults, such as imperfections in dyeing or holes that are common. It is then opened and left to rest for approximately 1 day and then cut according to the paern by the garment. Using patterns awithin the manufacturing process allows you to estimate how much fabric is going to be used for each style. We prefer to use digitial paern because of its optimization and reduction of fabric waste.

ORIGINS COLLECTION

The styles are sent from the Stanley and Stella warehouse to Prommos in Madrid where each is customized with our Ocean Born Logo.

PONCHO COLLECTION

Our manufacturing partner Espinoza Textile in Madrid makes the actual poncho. The customized part of the poncho is sent to a couple blocks away to our embroidery partner in Madrid, Bordados Delcón, to be embroidered and then sent back to Espinoza to finish the poncho.

Our suppliers make sure that their employees have fair working conditions, which encompasses their pay and conditions, that’s why our garments are Fair Wear certified. Our garments are animal-friendly products, tha’s why they are Peta approved vegan certified.

PACKAGING

Our committment to reducing our impact does not only stop at the product. We also apply it to our packaging.

Each element within our packaging is shipped to our European based manufacturing partners, where they package all products after creation.

Our exterior labels are made with our portuguse partner, Costa Gerreiro, who use a range of recycled, biodegradable and responsibly sourced raw materials.

Meet our certificate! The FSC certificate commits to the proper managment of the forest and ensures that it’s biodiversity remains intact.

Our Noissue Eco Packaging Alliance bags are 100% compostable sachet made of 80% PBAT and 20% PLA. They can be composed into your home or at a composting facility in your area.

The Home Compostable logo let’s you know that our packaging can be composted a home and will be non-toxic to the environment. The entire process takes 180 days.

The AS 4736 Compostable certificate verifies certain materials made of plastics as compostable or biodegradable under industrial conditions.

TRANSPORTING

Did you know that the fashion industry produces about 10% of annual global carbon emissions? To create an even clearer picture: that 10% is more than all shipping done by sea and international flights combined.

Transportation can be one of the most polluting process of the supply chain, but we do our best to make sure that our footprint is kept to minimum at all costs. All finished and packaged garments are stored locally in our warehouse in Madrid Spain, Looper Logisitics, while they await for someone like you to give them a forever home.Did you know that the fashion industry produces about 10% of annual global carbon emissions?
